AUSTIN (March 2, 2008) – YrMomma4Obama.com, a first of it’s kind multi-platform campaign launched on the ground in Texas last week with a diverse group of students, political activists and entertainment professionals to support Barack Obama’s candidacy with innovative outreach strategies. Using the latest social networking, viral, and peer-to-peer marketing techniques, while taking a page from the music industry’s playbook, the young voters behind YrMomma4Obama are urging peers to talk directly to their parents and the adults in their lives about their support for Obama’s candidacy.
“Is yr Mama 4 Obama? We need our parents to vote for him 2 win TX on Mar 4. Pass this on to everyone u know and tell your parents how u feel. Gobama!” is an example of the text messages that started flying last week around Texas and Ohio with YrMomma4Obama’s launch. Street teams are on the ground through the March 4 primaries at UT Austin and Texas State University in San Marcos distributing materials and engaging young voters while a rapidly growing Facebook group reaches out to voters online.
“Young people overwhelmingly support Obama - In a recent RT Strategies poll of 18-34 year olds, more than 55% of young Democratic voters supported Barack Obama. Young people in Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania will support him enthusiastically. Now we just need to make sure our parents vote for him too” said Amber Goodwin of Texas State University, YrMomma4Obamma’s Outreach Director.
“We started Yrmomma4obama to encourage young people to take even more leadership in this election and to get them to influence the votes of their parents, friends, and families. Obama must perform well among older voters to win the key large states of TX and PA. Young voters can influence their parents to vote for Obama in this historic election” Catherine Geanuracos one of the group’s founders said. “YrMomma4Obama combines traditional grassroots organizing (word of mouth, student leadership), a peer-to-peer text message campaign, social network strategies (facebook group) and marketing tactics more traditionally employed by the entertainment industry (street teams) to get the word out and win these states for Obama.”
YrMomma4Obama was inspired in part by Christine "Roz" Samuels, a former Clinton superdelegate from New Jersey who switched her support to Barack Obama and told the Huffington Post that her adult children (all Obama supporters) influenced her decision to join the Obama delegate count column. Young people are participating in the Democratic primaries in unprecedented numbers. A Time magazine poll recently found that 74% of young people are paying attention to the campaign, and young people are doubling, tripling, or quadrupling their turnout in primaries and caucuses compared to the 2000 and 2004 elections.
